Equipos
La FA Cup [3] es una competición eliminatoria en la que participarán 124 equipos que intentarán llegar a la final en Wembley en mayo de 2021. La competición estuvo formada por los 92 equipos del sistema de la Football League (20 equipos de la Premier League y los 72 de total del EFL Championship , EFL League One y EFL League Two ) más los 32 equipos supervivientes de 644 equipos del Sistema de la Liga Nacional (niveles 5-10 del sistema de la liga de fútbol inglés ) que comenzaron la competencia en rondas de clasificación .
Todas las rondas se sortearon al azar, por lo general, al finalizar la ronda anterior o en la noche del último partido televisado de una ronda que se estaba jugando, según los derechos de transmisión televisiva.

Retraso y programación
Como resultado de la pandemia de COVID-19 en el Reino Unido , la competencia de la temporada anterior se retrasó, y la final se jugó aproximadamente tres meses tarde, el 1 de agosto de 2020. [5] En un año normal, la Copa FA comenzaría temprano Agosto, pero como la temporada anterior terminó tarde, el inicio de la FA Cup 2020-21 también se retrasó hasta el 31 de agosto de 2020. [6] [7]
Contrariamente a la especulación inicial de que la Copa FA 2020-21 se reduciría en tamaño, [8] el 25 de julio de 2020, la FA confirmó que los equipos de ligas inferiores podrían competir en la competencia, con 737 equipos aceptados (de 889 participantes ), lo que en realidad representa un aumento de dos equipos con respecto a la temporada anterior. [9] [10] Después de la liquidación de Macclesfield Town , 736 equipos finalmente ingresaron a la competencia.
Todos los equipos elegibles en el paso 5 del Sistema de la Liga Nacional (y superior) fueron aceptados en la competencia, y los lugares restantes se otorgaron a los clubes en el paso 6. En temporadas anteriores, el paso 6 clubes tuvieron acceso a la Ronda Preliminar Extra según su posición en la liga, pero debido a la cancelación de estas ligas en 2019-20, los lugares para estos equipos se asignaron mediante un sorteo aleatorio. Las fechas planificadas para las primeras rondas de clasificación se dieron a conocer a los clubes del Sistema de la Liga Nacional a finales de julio, [6] [11] y fueron confirmadas por la FA el 3 de agosto de 2020. [3] Con repeticiones eliminadas de todas las rondas, algunas rondas de clasificación fueron programado para los martes en lugar del sábado habitual. [3]

Cambios en las reglas
Para encajar en un calendario truncado para la temporada 2020-21, las repeticiones se eliminaron por completo de la competencia. [3] El fondo de premios se redujo, y las cifras volvieron a las utilizadas por última vez en la Copa FA 2017-18 . [3] Si bien las restricciones para que los fanáticos asistieran a los juegos en persona estaban vigentes, el dinero del premio habitual otorgado a los ganadores en cada ronda se dividió entre un 75% y un 25% con los perdedores. Rondas clasificatorias
Los equipos que no eran miembros de la Premier League ni de la English Football League compitieron en las rondas clasificatorias para asegurar uno de los 32 lugares disponibles en la Primera Ronda Proper. La competición de clasificación comenzó con la Ronda Preliminar Extra el 31 de agosto de 2020. [6]
Primera ronda propia
El sorteo de la Primera Ronda Proper se celebró el 26 de octubre de 2020. Los 31 ganadores de la cuarta ronda de clasificación se unieron a los clubes de la Liga Uno y la Liga Dos y los ganadores del Chorley en 40 eliminatorias disputadas durante el fin de semana del 7 de noviembre. [13] Esta ronda incluyó a un equipo del nivel 9 , Skelmersdale United , el equipo con el ranking más bajo que queda en la competencia. Chesterfield originalmente fue atraído para jugar en Rochdale en esta ronda. Sin embargo, debido a que Chesterfield alineó a un jugador no elegible durante su partido de la cuarta ronda de clasificación [14] contra el condado de Stockport , el condado de Stockport volvió a jugar el partido y finalmente lo ganó. Segunda ronda propia
The draw for the Second Round Proper was held on 9 November 2020. The 40 winners from the First Round Proper competed in 20 ties played over the weekend of 28 November.[16] This round included two teams from level 8, Canvey Island and Marine, the lowest ranked teams left in the competition.
