El distrito electoral fue creado en Confederación en 1867. Regresó a dos miembros hasta 1968.
El más notable de los parlamentarios de la equitación fue Robert Borden , que fue líder conservador de 1901-1920, y primer ministro de Canadá de 1911-1920. Borden representó la equitación desde 1896-1904 y nuevamente desde 1909-1917. Otro diputado notable fue Robert Stanfield , líder del Partido Conservador Progresista de 1967 a 1976, quien representó a la equitación de 1968 a 1979.
Halifax estuvo representada por el Nuevo Partido Democrático de 1997 a 2015, con el Partido Liberal en segundo lugar en todas las elecciones de 2000 a 2015. Los límites de la equitación se redistribuyeron en 2004. Antes de esa fecha, comprendía la península de Halifax, el comunidad de Fairview y parte de Clayton Park.
Alexa McDonough , quien renunció como líder del NDP en 2003, pero se quedó para representar a Halifax en la Cámara de los Comunes . McDonough se postuló para la reelección contra la popular concejala Sheila Fougere en 2004, quien estuvo a 1000 votos de vencer al titular. Geografía
El distrito incluye la ciudad vieja de Halifax excepto por la parte occidental extrema, el área a lo largo de la costa oeste del puerto de Halifax y a lo largo del Océano Atlántico hasta Pennant . También incluye Sable Island . El área es de 215,64 km 2 (83,26 millas cuadradas).
