La cima de una montaña o colina se puede medir de tres formas principales:
- La elevación topográfica de una cumbre mide la altura de la cumbre sobre el nivel del mar geodésico . [2] [3]
- La prominencia topográfica de una cumbre es una medida de qué tan alto se eleva la cumbre sobre sus alrededores. [4] [3]
- El aislamiento topográfico (o radio de dominancia) de una cumbre mide qué tan lejos se encuentra la cumbre de su punto más cercano de igual elevación. [5]
En los Estados Unidos, solo Denali supera los 6000 metros (19,685 pies) de elevación. Cuatro cumbres principales superan los 5000 metros (16,404 pies), nueve superan los 4500 metros (14,764 pies), 104 superan los 4000 metros (13,123 pies) , 220 superan los 3500 metros (11,483 pies) y 302 cumbres principales superan los 3000 metros (9843 pies) elevación.

De estas 200 cumbres principales más altas de los Estados Unidos, 88 se encuentran en Colorado, 49 en Alaska, 22 en California, 14 en Wyoming, 8 en Nuevo México, 5 en Utah, 4 en Nevada, 3 en Montana, 2 en Washington, 2 en Hawái, 2 en Idaho y 1 en Arizona.
