Los Campeonatos Mundiales de Atletismo de Cross Country son la competición más importante de la carrera internacional de cross . Anteriormente celebrado anualmente y organizado por World Athletics (antes IAAF), fue inaugurado en 1973, cuando reemplazó a los Campeonatos Internacionales de Cross Country . Fue una competencia anual hasta 2011, cuando World Athletics la cambió a un evento bienal. [1]
Historia
Tradicionalmente, el Campeonato del Mundo de Cross Country constaba de cuatro carreras: una para hombres (12 km) y para mujeres (8 km); y uno para hombres jóvenes (8 km) y para mujeres jóvenes (6 km). La puntuación se hizo para individuos y para equipos nacionales. En la competición por equipos, las posiciones finales de los seis mejores goleadores de un equipo de hasta nueve se suman para los hombres y mujeres, respectivamente, y gana el puntaje más bajo. Para las carreras juveniles, se puntúan los tres primeros de un equipo de hasta cuatro.
El año 1998 vio la introducción de dos nuevos eventos en el Campeonato del Mundo de Cross Country, una carrera corta para hombres y una carrera corta para mujeres. La última vez que se llevaron a cabo estas carreras de 4 km fue en 2006, y no hay planes públicos para recuperarlas.
En una increíble demostración de dominio, Etiopía o Kenia han ganado la carrera por equipos de hombres mayores todos los años desde 1981, tanto en las carreras cortas como en las largas. Estas naciones han disfrutado de un dominio similar en las carreras masculinas junior desde 1982. En la carrera masculina senior de 12 km, Kenia ganó el campeonato mundial durante 18 años consecutivos, desde 1986 hasta 2003, un récord de éxito internacional sin igual. . Del mismo modo, en el lado femenino, solo otra nación ha ganado la carrera larga por equipos desde 1991: Portugal , en 1994. Estas naciones africanas no fueron tan dominantes en las carreras cortas, pero han ganado todas las carreras juveniles femeninas desde su introducción en 1989. .

Muchos consideran que los Campeonatos del Mundo de Cross Country son las carreras más difíciles de ganar, incluso más difíciles que los Juegos Olímpicos. En la mayoría de los campeonatos importantes, los mejores corredores de distancia del mundo se dividen en unas pocas carreras, es decir, 3000 m de obstáculos , 5000 my 10000 m. Sin embargo, en ausencia de las carreras de circuito corto, el Campeonato Mundial de Cross Country enfrenta a todos los corredores entre sí en una sola carrera. Dopaje
Como en otras áreas del deporte, los atletas en la competencia tienen prohibido el dopaje y se realizan controles antes y en los campeonatos para asegurar que los atletas obedezcan las regulaciones. Se han producido un total de catorce infracciones por dopaje en los Campeonatos del Mundo de Cross Country, la primera de las cuales fue Cosmas Ndeti, que fue el subcampeón original en la carrera juvenil masculina de 1988 ; sigue siendo el único atleta despojado de una medalla por dopaje. Siete infracciones por dopaje provienen de atletas marroquíes, y los atletas portugueses representan otras tres. Las ediciones de 2010 y 2011 tuvieron el mayor número de infracciones de dopaje, con un total de cuatro y cinco, respectivamente.
