Dos encuestas humanas comprendieron las clasificaciones de fútbol de la División IA de la Asociación Atlética Colegial Nacional (NCAA) de 1986 . A diferencia de la mayoría de los deportes, el organismo rector del fútbol americano universitario, la NCAA, no otorga un campeonato nacional , sino que ese título lo otorga una o más agencias de votación diferentes.
