La provincia canadiense de Alberta tiene una red de carreteras provinciales de casi 31.000 kilómetros (19.000 millas) a partir de 2009, de los cuales 24.851 kilómetros (15.442 millas) fueron pavimentados. [1]
Todas las carreteras provinciales de Alberta son mantenidas por Alberta Transportation (AT), un departamento del Gobierno de Alberta . La red incluye dos series distintas de carreteras numeradas:
- La serie 1-216 (antes conocida como carreteras primarias), que constituye la red principal de carreteras de Alberta, normalmente pavimentada y con el mayor volumen de tráfico.
- La serie 500–986, que proporciona un acceso más local, con una mayor proporción de superficies de grava.
Historia [ editar ]
En 1926, Alberta descontinuó su sistema de marcar carreteras con diferentes colores a favor de un sistema de numeración. [2] Para 1928, el año en que un camino de grava se extendía desde Edmonton hasta la frontera de los Estados Unidos, la red de carreteras provinciales de Alberta comprendía 2.310 km (1.440 millas). [2]
Antes de 1973, el sistema de carreteras en expansión comprendía carreteras de un dígito y de dos dígitos, y algunos números tenían sufijos de letras (por ejemplo, Highway 1X, Highway 26A). [3] En 1973, surgió un segundo sistema de carreteras, que utilizaba tres dígitos a partir de los años 500 y se denominaba carreteras secundarias, mientras que el sistema existente seguía denominándose carreteras provinciales. [4] En 1974, las carreteras provinciales se conocieron como carreteras primarias; [5] y en 1990, las carreteras secundarias se conocieron como carreteras secundarias. [6]
Las carreteras secundarias se abolieron en 2000, y la mayoría se convirtió en carreteras primarias. [7] El sistema ampliado de carreteras primarias se dividió en dos subconjuntos: antiguas carreteras primarias, que se convirtieron en la serie 1-216; [8] y antiguas carreteras secundarias, que se convirtieron en la serie 500-986. [9] En 2010, todas las carreteras se conocieron como carreteras provinciales, manteniendo las dos series numeradas. 1 - Serie 216 [ editar ]
Las series 1 a 216 de carreteras provinciales de Alberta son las principales carreteras de Alberta. Están numerados del 1 al 100, con la excepción de las carreteras de circunvalación alrededor de Calgary y Edmonton , que están numeradas 201 y 216 respectivamente. Los números aplicados a estas carreteras se derivan de la combinación de los números asignados de las carreteras centrales norte-sur y este-oeste que se cruzan con las carreteras de los anillos. En Calgary, la Carretera 201 se deriva de la Carretera 2 norte-sur y la Carretera este-oeste 1. En Edmonton, la Carretera 216 se deriva de la misma Carretera 2 norte-sur y la Carretera 16 este-oeste.
Dentro de esta serie, todas o partes de las carreteras 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 15, 16, 28, 28A, 35, 43, 49, 63, 201 y 216 están designadas como rutas principales del Sistema Nacional de Carreteras de Canadá (NHS). . [12] La autopista 28 desde la autopista 63 hasta Cold Lake está designada como ruta de alimentación del NHS y la autopista 58 entre Rainbow Lake y la autopista 88 se designa como ruta norte / remota del NHS. Las carreteras 1, 2, 3, 4, 16 y 43 se consideran las carreteras interprovinciales e internacionales más importantes de Alberta y son carreteras divididas ( autopistas ) o autopistas en gran parte o en toda su longitud. Los límites de velocidad son generalmente 110 km / h (68 mph) divididos entre autopistas / autopistas y 100 km / h (62 mph) en otras. Segmentos de la autopista 1 y la autopista 16 a través de los parques nacionales dentro de las Montañas Rocosas de Alberta que pueden ser de 90 km / h (56 mph) o 70 km / h (43 mph).
El corredor de la autopista 15 / 28A / 28/63 entre Edmonton y Fort McMurray se considera una de las carreteras intraprovinciales más importantes de Alberta. Es vital para la operación de arenas bituminosas.
Aunque solo las carreteras 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 15, 16, 43, 63, 100, 201 y 216 están hermanadas (autopistas) en la mayor parte de su longitud, la gran mayoría de las series de carreteras 1 a 216 de Alberta son De dos carriles y asfaltado. Solo cuatro carreteras dentro de la serie tienen segmentos que permanecieron con grava. Estos incluyen segmentos de las carreteras 40, 58 y 68 y un segmento corto cerca del término norte de la autopista 63. [13]
Las autopistas 1 y 16 son rutas de la autopista Trans-Canada y están firmadas con escudos TCH, no escudos provinciales estándar.

La serie 500 - 986 de carreteras provinciales de Alberta generalmente se considera carreteras locales o rurales. La serie 500-986 de carreteras provinciales se divide en tres subseries:
- Las carreteras 500/600 son carreteras de oeste a este donde la numeración aumenta hacia el norte desde la frontera de Montana hasta la frontera de los Territorios del Noroeste .
- Las carreteras 700/800 son carreteras de sur a norte donde la numeración aumenta hacia el este desde la frontera de Columbia Británica hasta la frontera de Saskatchewan .
- Las 900 carreteras son carreteras más nuevas o planificadas que se han establecido para su consideración futura como posibles extensiones o realineamientos de carreteras dentro de la serie 1 - 216.
Algunas de estas carreteras están pavimentadas, mientras que otras son total o parcialmente de grava. Los límites de velocidad en zonas rurales oscilan entre 80 km / h (50 mph) y 100 km / h (62 mph).

Urban approach roads[edit]
An urban approach road (UAR) is an access route managed by Alberta Transportation that connects urbanized areas to designated provincial highways.[81] The following is a list of all urban approach roads in Alberta as of March 2017.[13][82]
