La nobleza se creó el 18 de julio de 1821 para Lady Charlotte Strutt , esposa del coronel Joseph Strutt , miembro del Parlamento por Maldon . Lady Rayleigh era hija de James FitzGerald, primer duque de Leinster , y su esposa Lady Emily Lennox , la segunda de las famosas hermanas Lennox.
