Morgan nació en Wewoka, Oklahoma . Se graduó de East Central State College en Ada, Oklahoma en 1968. En 1972, Morgan obtuvo un título de Doctor en Optometría del Southern College of Optometry en Memphis, Tennessee antes de convertirse en profesional del golf ese mismo año. Es miembro de la fraternidad Sigma Tau Gamma .
Morgan ganó siete eventos en el PGA Tour entre 1977 y 1990. También fue uno de los cinco primeros clasificados más consistentes durante este período. Logró 21 2do lugar y 21 3er lugar en el PGA Tour en su carrera. [2] El torneo más prestigioso que ganó en el PGA Tour fue la Serie Mundial de Golf de 1978 . También jugó en los equipos de la Ryder Cup de 1979 y 1983 .
Morgan era conocido por jugar torneos con poca o ninguna práctica. Fue excepcional "jugando frío".
Aunque nunca ganó un título importante durante su tiempo en el PGA Tour, Morgan mostró signos de brillantez. Por ejemplo, durante el US Open de 1992 en Pebble Beach , Morgan se convirtió en el primer jugador en alcanzar 10 bajo par (-10) durante la competencia del US Open cuando registró un birdie en el tercer hoyo durante la tercera ronda.
