En 1858 se establecieron los Tribunales de Distrito con una jurisdicción civil de hasta £ 200 GB en sustitución del Tribunal de Peticiones, que sólo se sentaba en lugares limitados, [a] y tenía un límite general de reclamaciones de £ 10 a £ 30 GB . [2] Inicialmente, cada juez fue designado para un distrito específico. [3] A partir de 1955 se nombraron jueces para todos los tribunales de distrito.
Los Tribunales de Sesiones Trimestrales conocían de asuntos penales graves que no estaban sancionados con la muerte . A partir de 1858, cada juez de la Corte de Distrito tuvo un nombramiento concurrente como Presidente de las Cortes de Sesiones Trimestrales para el distrito al que fueron designados. [4] En 1973, los tribunales de distrito separados y los tribunales de sesiones trimestrales fueron reemplazados por un solo tribunal de distrito que ejercía jurisdicción penal y civil en todo el estado. [5]
El cargo de Presidente de los Jueces de los Tribunales de Distrito se introdujo en 1950 para ejercer funciones administrativas en relación con los tribunales similares al papel del Presidente del Tribunal Supremo en el Tribunal Supremo . [6] El cargo pasó a llamarse Juez Jefe con la reestructuración de los tribunales en 1973. [5]
El Tribunal de Compensación de Nueva Gales del Sur fue abolido el 1º de enero de 2004 y los jueces fueron trasladados al Tribunal de Distrito, manteniendo su antigüedad en función de la fecha de su nombramiento para el Tribunal de Compensación. [7]
En 1918, la Ley de Jubilación de Jueces de 1918 (NSW), operó para imponer retrospectivamente una edad de jubilación de 70 que afecta inmediatamente a Charles Heydon , Ernest Docker y Grantley Fitzhardinge y posteriormente a otros jueces en una posición similar, como Montgomerie Hamilton y Alfred Backhouse . [8]
