En 1967, la Ciudad de San Francisco, California adoptó el Artículo 10 del Código de Planificación, otorgando a la ciudad la autoridad para designar y proteger puntos de referencia de alteraciones inapropiadas. A partir de febrero de 2019, la ciudad ha designado 288 estructuras u otras propiedades como puntos de referencia designados de San Francisco. [1] Muchas de las propiedades también han recibido reconocimiento a nivel federal por su inclusión en el Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos o por su designación como Monumentos Históricos Nacionales .
