Un tercer nivel nacional de la liga escocesa de fútbol se estableció por primera vez en la temporada 1923-24 como División Tres, pero solo duró dos temporadas completas debido a dificultades financieras.
Como resultado, una liga de tercer nivel no se compitió hasta 1946-1947 con la División C, que también incluía equipos de reserva de los clubes de las divisiones anteriores. La División C operó como competición nacional durante las tres primeras temporadas; a partir de entonces, se dividió en dos secciones regionales hasta la temporada 1954–55 , cuando se abolió nuevamente el tercer nivel. El tercer nivel se restableció en la temporada 1975-76 , cuando se creó una división conocida como Segunda División . Su estatus dentro del sistema de la liga escocesa de fútbol cambió en la temporada 1998-99 , cuando los clubes del nivel superior (Premier Division) se separaron de la Scottish Football League para formar la Scottish Premier League . La Segunda División seguía siendo el tercer nivel del sistema de la liga escocesa, pero se convirtió en el segundo nivel de la Scottish Football League en lugar del tercero. En 2013, la Scottish Premier League y la Scottish Football League se fusionaron para formar la Scottish Professional Football League , y el tercer nivel se conoció como elLiga Escocesa Uno .
