La R League (en coreano : R 리그 ), también conocida como la Liga Coreana de Reserva de Fútbol Profesional , es la liga para los equipos de reserva de los clubes de fútbol de asociaciones profesionales en Corea del Sur . La liga comenzó en 1990 con cinco equipos de reserva de clubes miembros de la Liga K : Pohang Steelworks , Yukong Elephants , Daewoo Royals , Hyundai Horang-i y Lucky-Goldstar . [1] [2] Pohang Steelworks ganó el título inaugural, terminando dos puntos por delante de Yukong Elephantspara levantar la corona. [3] Pero la liga fue de corta duración durante sólo un año y los equipos de reserva participaron en torneos semiprofesionales como el Campeonato Nacional de Fútbol . [4]
La competición se relanzó en 2000 con un formato de doble liga. Nueve equipos de reserva se dividieron en la Liga Central (actualmente Liga Grupo A) y la Liga Sur (actualmente Liga Grupo B). Cada equipo jugó contra los otros equipos en la misma liga cuatro veces. En 2001, Police FC se unió a la R League y el equipo de reserva de Gwangju Sangmu se unió en 2002.
Para la temporada 2009, la Liga R fue renombrada a su nombre actual [5] y trece de los quince clubes de la Liga K están alineando equipos de reserva en la liga junto con el Police FC, dando un total de catorce clubes participantes. Gangwon FC y Jeju United no participaron.
Como parte del plan para formar el sistema de ascenso y descenso en la Liga K a partir de la temporada 2013, se planeó que la Liga R se redujera después de la temporada 2012 . [6] La competición se interrumpió hasta 2015. A partir de la temporada 2016, los clubes de la K League anunciaron oficialmente que reanudarán la R League. [7]
