The Nuzlocke Challenge (commonly referred to as a Nuzlocke) is an unofficial challenge played in the Pokémon series of video games. It aims to make the franchise more challenging to players, often adults, seeking to increase their enjoyment of a game series originally conceived for children. In a Nuzlocke, the player attempts a roguelike playthrough of any Pokémon game with the aim of finishing the main story. The challenge was popularized online by internet personalities and became well-known in the Pokémon community.[1]

The challenge stemmed from a webcomic created by Nick Franco titled Pokémon: Hard-Mode, which was originally posted on 4chan's /v/ board in 2010. Citing being "bored" of Pokémon Ruby in its original form, the creator set out to play the game in a different way, thus conceiving the original ruleset for the challenge.[1][2][3] Franco did not imagine there would be a large audience, stating "I doodled up the original 4 comics out of boredom and I figured at least one person would get a chuckle out of it, just a little way of giving back to a community that had entertained me for so long."[3]

In the webcomic, Franco refers to the challenge as "hard mode" throughout, rather than the fan-created term "Nuzlocke". The name of the challenge originates from one of the Pokémon used in Franco's original run, a Nuzleaf, which was drawn in the likeness of the fictional character John Locke from the TV show Lost.[4]
