Sir John Taylor, primer baronet

Sir John Taylor, primer baronet FRS (1745 - 8 de mayo de 1786) fue un plantador nacido en Jamaica que fue miembro de la Royal Society y fue nombrado baronet de Lysson Hall en Jamaica. Vivió en Londres pero murió en Jamaica.

Taylor nació en la Colonia de Jamaica en 1745 de Patrick Talizour y Martha Taylor, la hija de George Taylor de Caymanas, Jamaica. [1] Su padre escocés había nacido con el apellido Tailzour en Borrowfield , pero anglicanizó su nombre a Taylor cuando se casaron. [2] [3]

El hermano mayor de John, Simon Taylor , usó la herencia de su padre para comprar varias plantaciones de azúcar, comprar esclavos y aumentar la riqueza familiar. También se convirtió en abogado en Jamaica y representó a un gran número de propietarios de plantaciones ausentes. Simon se convirtió supuestamente en la persona más rica de Jamaica , convirtiéndose en miembro de la Cámara de la Asamblea de Jamaica en el proceso. La riqueza de Simon, derivada de las plantaciones de azúcar , financió el estilo de vida extravagante de John en Europa. [4]

John Taylor se convirtió en baronet el 1 de septiembre de 1778. Ese mismo año se casó con una heredera, Elizabeth Goddin Haughton, hija única de Philip Haughton y Mary Brissett, propietarios de las plantaciones de azúcar Orange, Venture y Unity en Hanover Parish , en el oeste de Jamaica. Eventualmente tuvieron seis hijos. [5]

Si bien Simon construyó cuidadosamente sus plantaciones de azúcar en Jamaica, a menudo criticaba el estilo de vida extravagante de su hermano menor. [6]

Simon convenció a su hermano John de que regresara a Jamaica para tomar el control de sus propiedades en Hannover, que se estaban derrumbando sin su atención. Sin embargo, un año después de llegar a Jamaica, John Taylor murió en 1786 durante una visita a la plantación de Simon's Lyssons en el extremo este de la isla. Su título fue tomado por su hijo, Simon. [7]
