El Open Championship es una competencia de golf anual establecida en 1860 y dirigida por The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (el R&A). El Royal Liverpool Golf Club fue el anfitrión del evento por primera vez en 1897 . Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club se convirtió en el próximo campo en albergar el evento en 1909 . El campo fue sede de un campeonato más en 1920 , pero los intentos posteriores de albergar el Campeonato en 1938 y 1949 se vieron frustrados por el mal tiempo y el campo se eliminó de la rotación. [9] Royal Troon , Royal Lytham & St Annes y Carnoustie celebraron el Open Championship por primera vez en 1923 , 1926 y 1931 respectivamente. El Old Course de St Andrews ha albergado la mayor cantidad de campeonatos con 29 en total, el más reciente con el Open Championship 2015 . El campeonato se ha celebrado fuera de Escocia e Inglaterra en dos ocasiones, en 1951 y 2019 ; El Royal Portrush Golf Club en Irlanda del Norte fue la sede de ambos torneos.
