Coldplay are a British alternative rock band formed in London by Chris Martin (lead vocals, piano), Jonny Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass guitar), Will Champion (drums, percussion) and Phil Harvey (creative direction). They have released eight studio albums — Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X&Y (2005) Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), Mylo Xyloto (2011), Ghost Stories (2014), A Head Full of Dreams (2015), and Everyday Life (2019) — which have sold over 80 million copies.[1] The band has released around thirty singles, including: "Yellow", which was the band's first hit in the United States where it reached number six on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart;[2] "Speed of Sound", which reached number two on the UK Singles Chart;[3] "Viva la Vida", which was the band's first number-one single in the UK and the US[4][5] and "Paradise", which in 2012 became Coldplay's second UK number 1, reaching the same spot on several other charts across Europe.

They were honored with 9 awards from 28 nominations in the Brit Awards, being the most awarded and nominated group of all-time in the ceremony.[6] Coldplay is also the first act in history to win British Album of the Year three times and British Group four times, scoring the most nominations for both of these categories as well. Including Song of the Year and Record of the Year, they have received 7 Grammy Awards from 35 nominations, the second-most in history for a British group after the Beatles' nine wins.[7]
Coldplay has received twenty one MTV Awards, including seven MTV Video Music Awards from twenty-five nominations, eight MTV Europe Music Awards from twenty-seven nominations, one Los Premios MTV Latinoamérica from six nominations and five Video Play Awards, which do not have prior nominations. The music video for "The Scientist" received all the awards for which it was nominated at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. They received four World Music Awards and nine Billboard Music Awards, with two of them being from the Live Music Awards. Coldplay have also been nominated in the Golden Globe Awards for their song "Atlas" and named Songwriters of the Year by the Ivor Novello Awards and ASCAP London Music Awards in 2003 and 2010 respectively. Around 2014, Fuse ranked them as the 28th most awarded act of all-time, being at sixth place amongst groups.[8]
