Los torneos de waterpolo de los Juegos Olímpicos de Verano 2016 en Río de Janeiro se llevaron a cabo del 6 al 20 de agosto en el Centro Acuático Maria Lenk en Barra da Tijuca . Veinte equipos (doce de hombres y ocho de mujeres) compitieron en el torneo. [1] [2] Los juegos que terminaron en empates en rondas eliminatorias se decidieron por penales, ya que las horas extraordinarias han sido abolidas desde 2013.

The competition consisted of two stages; a group stage followed by a knockout stage.
Group stage[edit]
The teams were divided into two groups of six countries, playing every team in their group once. Two points were awarded for a victory, one point for a draw. The top four teams per group qualified for the quarterfinals.
