Vida temprana
Fothergill Watson, nacido en Mansfield , Nottinghamshire en 1841, era hijo del adinerado comerciante de encaje de Nottingham Robert Watson y Mary Ann Fothergill. Cambió su nombre a Watson Fothergill en 1892 para continuar con su apellido materno.
Familia

Carrera profesional
En 1856, entró en la oficina de St Peter's Gate de Frederick Jackson, arquitecto y topógrafo en Nottingham. A mediados de 1860 se trasladó como asistente de Isaac Charles Gilbert, que tenía su base en Clinton Street, Nottingham. Después de pasar alrededor de 18 meses con Gilbert, se mudó a principios de 1862 para unirse a la oficina de Arthur William Blomfield en Londres. En 1864 estaba trabajando con John Middleton en Cheltenham, pero ese mismo año se fue para establecer su propia oficina en 6 Clinton Street, Nottingham. [4] Permaneció en Clinton Street hasta que fue demolida por las obras relacionadas con la llegada del Great Central Railway en 1894. Se mudó a una nueva oficina temporal en 18 George Street, y arregló la reconstrucción de 15 George Street frente a la cual él completado el año siguiente y se mudó el 12 de diciembre de 1895.
Estuvo asociado con Lawrence George Summers desde 1880 y se retiró en 1912.
Se le atribuye haber tenido un gran impacto en la arquitectura de la principal ciudad industrial británica de Nottingham , y haber diseñado más de cien edificios en la ciudad, desde oficinas, bancos y almacenes, hasta iglesias y viviendas privadas. Su estilo fácilmente reconocible incluye el uso de bandas horizontales contrastantes de ladrillo rojo y azul, aleros y balcones de madera oscura y elaboradas torrecillas y tallas de piedra.
