Lindsay Thompson sucedió a Rupert Hamer como líder y primer ministro del Partido Liberal el 5 de junio de 1981, y John Cain Jr. reemplazó a Frank Wilkes como líder del Partido Laborista en septiembre de 1981. El gobierno liberal en ejercicio dirigido por Lindsay Thompson fue derrotado por el Partido Laborista dirigido por John Cain con un columpio de 17 asientos. El ALP volvió al gobierno en Victoria por primera vez en 27 años.
