El Salón de la Fama de la Mujer de Iowa se creó para reconocer los logros de los modelos femeninos asociados con el estado estadounidense de Iowa , y es un esfuerzo de la Comisión de la Condición Jurídica y Social de la Mujer de Iowa (ICSW).
Historia
En 1972, el estado de Iowa creó el ICSW para supervisar los problemas de la mujer, con Cristine Swanson Wilson como su primera presidenta. Desde los inicios del Salón de la Fama en 1975, el ICSW y el Gobernador de Iowa incorporan a cuatro nominados anuales en una ceremonia pública. El evento se lleva a cabo en el Día de la Igualdad de la Mujer , que conmemora la ratificación el 26 de agosto de 1920 de la Decimonovena Enmienda a la Constitución de los Estados Unidos que otorgó a las mujeres el derecho al voto. Los homenajeados son nominados por el público a través de formularios en línea disponibles en el sitio web de ICSW. [1] El ICSW también creó la "Medalla Cristine Wilson por la Igualdad y la Justicia" anual en 1982. Wilson fue incluido en el Salón de la Fama en 1989. [2]
Los miembros iniciales fueron la primera secretaria de Estado de Iowa, Ola Babcock Miller , quien creó la Patrulla del Estado de Iowa ; presidenta y miembro fundadora de la Asociación de Sufragio Femenino de Iowa, Amelia Bloomer ; presidenta de la Asociación Nacional Estadounidense por el Sufragio Femenino y fundadora de la Liga de Mujeres Votantes , Carrie Chapman Catt ; y Annie Turner Wittenmyer, quienes fundaron la Unión de Mujeres Cristianas por la Templanza , formaron una sociedad de ayuda para apoyar a los soldados del Ejército de la Unión durante la Guerra Civil , y también ayudaron a aprobar leyes de pensiones para enfermeras en esa misma guerra. Catt fue la primera incorporada.
En los años siguientes, a las filas del Salón de la Fama se unieron mujeres de todos los ámbitos de la vida. A partir de las ceremonias de incorporación de 2017, se han incorporado 172 mujeres. [3] La lista de homenajeados incluye pioneros de derechos civiles, líderes de temas globales, los trabajadores voluntarios de la comunidad, funcionarios elegidos, los artistas, la profesión médica y un gran cuerno de la abundancia de las contribuciones de las mujeres del estado. Dos Primeras Damas de los Estados Unidos , Lou Henry Hoover y Mamie Eisenhower se agregaron en 1987 y 1993 respectivamente. La conservacionista ambiental Gladys B. Black hizo la lista en 1985. La micóloga Lois Hattery Tiffany fue agregada en 1991 por su carrera de educar al público sobre los hongos. El ejército está representado por la Mujer Cuerpo de Ejército veterano Rosa Cunningham en 1980 y por el antiguo ejército de Estados Unidos Auditor General de agente Phyllis Propp Fowle en 2001.
