El Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Linares ( español : Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Linares ) fue un anual torneo de ajedrez , jugado generalmente a finales de febrero, que toma su nombre de la ciudad de Linares en la provincia de Jaén de Andalucía , España, en la que se llevó a cabo. A veces se describe como el Wimbledon del ajedrez , siendo uno de los torneos anuales más fuertes celebrados en la gira de ajedrez de facto , junto con los eventos "Tata Steel" (Wijk aan Zee), Tal Memorial y Dortmund .
El torneo de Linares comenzó en 1978 y se llevó a cabo anualmente desde 1988 hasta 2010 (a excepción de 1996). Desde 2010, el torneo no se celebra por motivos económicos.
Historia
El evento, patrocinado por el empresario español Luis Rentero, se celebró por primera vez en 1978. [1] En ese momento no era un evento de élite y fue ganado por el relativamente desconocido sueco Jaan Eslon ), (en el tie-break del El argentino Roberto Luis Debarnot ). Después del evento del año siguiente, se llevó a cabo cada dos años hasta 1987, cuando no se llevó a cabo ningún torneo, año en el que Linares fue sede de la Final de Candidatos, un partido para determinar un retador al título mundial de Kasparov con Anatoly Karpov y Andrei Sokolov . El evento pospuesto de 1987 se aplazó hasta 1988 y el torneo a partir de ese momento se convirtió en un evento anual, con la excepción de 1996, cuando se celebró el Campeonato Mundial Femenino de Ajedrez . Rentero era un fuerte oponente de las tablas cortas en el ajedrez, hasta el punto de que ofrecía bonificaciones en efectivo por jugar partidas más largas. Se dice que los participantes en estos llamados " sorteos de grandes maestros " a veces fueron penalizados sin invitación para la edición del próximo año. [1] El torneo de 1994 tuvo una calificación Elo promedio de 2685, la más alta en ese momento. El campo, en el orden final final, estaba formado por Karpov, Kasparov, Shirov , Bareev , Kramnik , Lautier , Anand , Kamsky , Topalov , Ivanchuk , Gelfand , Illescas , Judit Polgár y Beliavsky . Karpov ganó con un invicto 13/11. Jeff Sonas consideró la actuación de Karpov como el mejor resultado de torneo de la historia. [2] El torneo de 1994 también se destacó por un incidente en el que Garry Kasparov "retrocedió" contra Judit Polgár . Los dedos de Kasparov soltaron brevemente un caballo antes de darse cuenta de que el movimiento fue un error; luego movió el caballo a una casilla diferente. Polgár (17 años en ese momento) no protestó y el árbitro no intervino. Kasparov pasó a ganar el juego. [3]
En 1998, el formato del torneo cambió de un solo torneo de todos contra todos a un evento doble de todos contra todos (lo que significa que cada participante juega contra todos los demás participantes dos veces, una con cada color).
Kasparov anunció su retiro del ajedrez después del torneo de 2005.
Desde 2006 hasta 2008, la primera mitad del torneo se llevó a cabo en la ciudad mexicana de Morelia . La segunda parte tuvo lugar en Linares. En consecuencia, el evento a veces se conoce como Morelia-Linares.
En 2009 y 2010 todo el evento tuvo lugar en Linares. [4]
El torneo de Linares de 2011 fue cancelado, [5] [6] por razones que incluyen problemas económicos generales. El torneo fue cancelado de nuevo en 2012, [7] sin retorno desde entonces.
