El Departamento de Transporte de Pensilvania (PennDOT) es responsable del establecimiento y clasificación de una red de carreteras estatales que incluye carreteras interestatales , carreteras estadounidenses y rutas estatales . Las carreteras estadounidenses e interestatales están clasificadas como rutas estatales en Pensilvania. La Commonwealth of Pennsylvania estableció el Sistema de Referencia de Ubicación (LRS) en 1987, que registra todas las rutas numeradas en Pennsylvania como SR-X. Una ruta estatal sería la SR 39, una ruta estadounidense sería la SR 22 y una ruta interestatal sería la SR 80. Sin embargo, las rutas numeradas entre 0000 y 0999 se clasifican como rutas de tráfico, que se abrevian como PA 39, US 22 y la I-80, en su lugar. Pronto se asignaron más números, incluidos números de tres dígitos para sucursales, como la Ruta 272 de Pensilvania desde la Ruta 72 de Pensilvania . Las carreteras numeradas de los Estados Unidos se asignaron a fines de 1926, y en 1928 se eliminaron las rutas estatales concurrentes con las rutas estadounidenses, mientras que a las que entraban en conflicto con las rutas estadounidenses se les asignaron nuevos números. En 1946, se produjo un desmantelamiento masivo de carreteras en todo el estado, y muchas rutas estatales fueron desmanteladas, truncadas o redirigidas. El establecimiento del Sistema de Carreteras Interestatales en 1959, además de querer eliminar algunas coincidencias en Pittsburgh , resultó en una pequeña renumeración en 1961 . [4]
Desde que Pennsylvania introdujo por primera vez rutas de tráfico numeradas en 1924, se ha utilizado una forma trapezoidal , en referencia a que Pennsylvania es el "Estado trapezoidal". Los letreros originalmente decían "Penna" (una abreviatura común para Pensilvania en ese momento), seguido del número de ruta en una numeración de estilo de bloque en un corte de piedra angular. A mediados de la década de 1950, los letreros se modificaron para tener "PA" en lugar de "Penna", con la única excepción de la línea principal de Pennsylvania Turnpike (que sigue usando "Penna" en la actualidad tanto para la línea principal, como para la extensión del noreste y para Pennsylvania Comisión de Turnpikelogo); Además, los números se hicieron más redondos y los letreros se hicieron más grandes para que fueran más legibles durante la conducción, y la forma trapezoidal en sí permaneció como un recorte. La mayoría de los letreros antiguos de la década de 1950 fueron reemplazados por el corte rectangular más nuevo con la piedra angular pintada a principios de la década de 1970, aunque muy pocos permanecen en lugares dispersos en carreteras no retiradas .
