La ficción apocalíptica es un subgénero de la ciencia ficción que se ocupa del fin de la civilización debido a una catástrofe potencialmente existencial como guerra nuclear , pandemia , ataque extraterrestre , evento de impacto , revuelta cibernética , singularidad tecnológica , disgenesia , fenómenos sobrenaturales , juicio divino , clima. cambio , agotamiento de recursos o algún otro desastre general .La ficción postapocalíptica se desarrolla en un mundo o civilización después de tal desastre. El marco de tiempo puede ser inmediatamente después de la catástrofe, centrándose en las tribulaciones o la psicología de los supervivientes, o considerablemente más tarde, a menudo incluyendo el tema de que la existencia de la civilización anterior a la catástrofe se ha olvidado (o mitificado).

Apocalipsis es una palabra griega que se refiere al fin del mundo. El apocalipsis es la creencia religiosa de que habrá un apocalipsis, un término que originalmente se refería a una revelación de la voluntad de Dios, pero que ahora generalmente se refiere a la creencia de que el mundo llegará a su fin muy pronto, incluso dentro de la propia vida. La ficción apocalíptica no retrata catástrofes, desastres o casi desastres que no desembocan en un apocalipsis. Una amenaza de apocalipsis no convierte a una ficción en apocalíptica. Por ejemplo, Armageddon y Deep Impact se consideran películas de desastres y no ficción apocalíptica porque, aunque la Tierra o la humanidad están terriblemente amenazadas, al final logran evitar la destrucción.
