Los Obie Awards o Off-Broadway Theatre Awards son premios anuales otorgados originalmente por el periódico The Village Voice a artistas y grupos de teatro en la ciudad de Nueva York . Los premios Obie fueron iniciados por Edwin (Ed) Fancher, editor de The Village Voice, quien manejó la parte financiera y comercial del proyecto. Se dieron por primera vez en 1956 bajo la dirección del crítico de teatro Jerry Tallmer. Inicialmente, solo las producciones fuera de Broadway eran elegibles; en 1964, las producciones fuera de Broadway se hicieron elegibles. Otros premios para el teatro fuera de Broadway son los premios Lucille Lortel , los premios Drama Desk , el premio Drama League y los premios Outer Critics Circle .

A partir de septiembre de 2014, los premios Obie son presentados conjuntamente por American Theatre Wing y Village Voice , y el Wing tiene la "responsabilidad general de administrar" los premios. [7]
