El ajedrez es un juego de mesa recreativo y competitivo que sejuega entre dos jugadores . A veces se le llama ajedrez occidental o internacional para distinguirlo de juegos relacionados como xiangqi . La forma actual del juego surgió en el sur de Europa durante la segunda mitad del siglo XV después de evolucionar a partir de juegos similares, mucho más antiguos, deorigen indio y persa . Hoy en día, el ajedrez es uno de los juegos más populares del mundo, jugado por millones de personas en todo el mundo en casa, en clubes , en línea , por correspondencia y entorneos .

El ajedrez es un juego de estrategia abstracto y no incluye información oculta . Se juega en un tablero de ajedrez cuadrado con 64 cuadrados dispuestos en una cuadrícula de ocho por ocho. Al principio, cada jugador (uno controlando las piezas blancas, el otro controlando las piezas negras) controla dieciséis piezas : un rey , una reina , dos torres , dos caballos , dos alfiles y ocho peones . El objetivo del juego es dar jaque mate al rey del oponente, por lo que el rey está bajo ataque inmediato (en " jaque") y no hay forma de que se escape. También hay varias formas en que un juego puede terminar en empate .

El ajedrez organizado surgió en el siglo XIX. La competición de ajedrez de hoy está gobernada internacionalmente por la FIDE (Federación Internacional de Ajedrez). El primer Campeón Mundial de Ajedrez universalmente reconocido , Wilhelm Steinitz , reclamó su título en 1886; Magnus Carlsen es el actual Campeón del Mundo. Se ha desarrollado una gran cantidad de teoría del ajedrez desde el inicio del juego. El Campeonato Mundial de Ajedrez se juega para determinar el campeón mundial de ajedrez . El actual campeón mundial es Magnus Carlsen de Noruega .

El primer campeonato mundial generalmente reconocido tuvo lugar en 1886, cuando los dos principales jugadores del mundo, Wilhelm Steinitz y Johannes Zukertort , jugaron un partido que ganó Steinitz. De 1886 a 1946, el campeón estableció los términos, requiriendo que cualquier retador levantara una apuesta considerable y derrotara al campeón en un partido para convertirse en el nuevo campeón mundial.
