El edificio, en Mortlake High Street, London SW14, data de 1543 y está catalogado como Grado II * . [4]
Historia
La primera capilla en Mortlake, fundada en 1348, [4] se encontraba en el lado del río de High Street, en un sitio que luego ocupó Mortlake Brewery . La única reliquia que se conserva es una pila del siglo XV presentada a esta iglesia por el arzobispo Bourchier (c.1404-86). [5]
El actual cementerio y la iglesia fueron entregados a la parroquia por el rey Enrique VIII en 1543, un evento conmemorado por una piedra en el frente occidental de la torre. Su inscripción "VIVAT RH8 1543" [5] es descartada por Cherry y Pevsner como "falsa". [6]
El edificio de 1543 ha sufrido muchas modificaciones y ampliaciones durante su larga historia y, de la iglesia Tudor original , solo queda la torre. [5] El campanario y la cúpula son un rasgo distintivo de la torre que aparece como un hito en muchos grabados e imágenes históricas de la orilla del Támesis . La apariencia actual de la iglesia es principalmente obra del arquitecto local Sir Arthur Blomfield , quien construyó el presbiterio en 1885; su firma construyó la nave en 1905. [6]
La casa de la sacristía data de 1670. Fue restaurada en 1979/80. [5]
Accesorios internos
El púlpito de la iglesia se instaló en 1902 en memoria de Albert Shadwell Shutt, quien había sido vicario de la iglesia desde 1866 hasta 1896.
Monumentos
La tumba más antigua que se conserva en el cementerio es la del astrólogo John Partridge , que murió en 1715. Hay monumentos a otras personas famosas, incluido el primer ministro británico, Henry Addington, primer vizconde de Sidmouth (1757-1844) [7] [8] y tres Lord Mayors de Londres . [9] Un monumento a John Dee (1527-1609), que vivía frente a la iglesia y está enterrado en un lugar sin marcar debajo del presbiterio , [5] se dio a conocer en junio de 2013.
Actualidad
Junto con Christ Church, East Sheen y All Saints 'Church, East Sheen , St Mary's forma la parroquia de Mortlake con East Sheen. La parroquia publica una revista mensual, Parish Link . [10] La iglesia se encuentra en las tradiciones central y liberal de la Iglesia de Inglaterra. [11] Los servicios se llevan a cabo los martes, sábados y domingos por la mañana. [12]
Mortlake Quiet Gardens se basa en el cementerio ajardinado y está afiliado a The Quiet Garden Trust . [13] [14]
