The barque struck the Seven Stones reef while both her master and mate were asleep below. She was bound for St Jago, Cuba, with sixteen crew, one passenger, and a cargo of coal, iron, and mining gear. Nine of her crew and the passenger took to one of the boats, rowed to the Sevenstones Lightship, ( Trinity House) and transferred to St Mary's, Isles of Scilly, by a pilot cutter. Seven crew drowned.[25][73]
