Sphaerius es un género de escarabajos , que comprende 23 especies, que son los únicos miembros vivos de la familia Sphaeriusidae . Por lo general, se encuentran a lo largo de los bordes de arroyos y ríos, donde se alimentan de algas ; ocurren en todos los continentes excepto en la Antártida . En los Estados Unidos se encuentran tres especies.
La forma general del escarabajo es convexa, brillante, marrón oscuro o negra con algunas marcas posibles. La cabeza es prominente, con ojos relativamente grandes separados y antenas capitadas . La longitud total varía de 0,5 a 1,2 mm (0,020 a 0,047 pulgadas).
Los escarabajos se encuentran en una variedad de ambientes húmedos, incluido el barro, debajo de las piedras, entre las raíces de las plantas y la hojarasca, y en los musgos de los pantanos. Almacenan algo de aire debajo de sus élitros .
Las hembras producen un solo huevo grande a la vez.
La familia solía ser conocida como "Sphaeriidae", pero el nombre estaba preocupado por una familia de almejas de agua dulce . El nombre fue reemplazado inapropiadamente con "Microsporidae" (cambiando el nombre del género a Microsporus ), pero esta ley ha sido reemplazada por un retorno al uso de Sphaerius y una reforma del apellido como Sphaeriusidae.
