Historia
En 1757, la Compañía de las Indias Orientales obtuvo los derechos zamindari o terratenientes de los 24 Parganas Zamindari de Mir Jafar , el nuevo nawab de Bengala . El estado de propiedad total fue entregado a Robert Clive en 1759 por una sanad o escritura que le otorgaba las 24 Parganas como jagir . Después de la muerte de Clive en 1774, los derechos de propiedad total de los 24 Parganas zamindari volvieron a la Compañía de las Indias Orientales. En 1814, el distrito constaba de dos partes: los suburbios de Calcuta (denominados Dihi Panchannagram ) y el resto. En 1834, varias parganas de Jessore y Nadia se agregaron a las 24 Parganas. Geografía
Algunas áreas de la subdivisión de Barasat Sadar son parte de North Hooghly Flat y otras áreas son parte de North Bidyadhari Plain, dos de las tres regiones fisiográficas en el distrito ubicado en el bajo delta del Ganges . Movimiento de población
El distrito de North 24 Parganas está densamente poblado, principalmente debido a la afluencia de refugiados del este de Pakistán (más tarde Bangladesh). Con una densidad de población de 2.182 habitantes por km 2 en 1971, ocupaba el tercer lugar en términos de densidad por km 2 en Bengala Occidental después de Calcuta y Howrah, y el vigésimo en la India.
