El Senado ( francés : Sénat , criollo haitiano : Sena ) es la cámara alta de la legislatura bicameral de Haití , el Parlamento haitiano . La cámara baja del Parlamento de Haití es la Cámara de Diputados . El Senado consta de treinta escaños, con tres miembros de cada uno de los diez departamentos administrativos . Antes de la creación del departamento de Nippes en 2003 había veintisiete escaños. Los senadores son elegidos por voto popular por períodos de seis años, y un tercio se elige cada dos años. No hay límites de mandato para los senadores; pueden ser reelegidos indefinidamente.

Después de las elecciones de 2000 , veintiséis de los asientos y luego veinte y siete estaban en manos de Jean-Bertrand Aristide 's Fanmi Lavalas partido. El Senado no se reunió luego del derrocamiento del gobierno de Aristide en febrero de 2004. Se estableció un gobierno interino luego de la rebelión y los senadores restantes no fueron reconocidos durante ese tiempo. El Senado se restableció y las elecciones se celebraron el 21 de abril de 2006. Las próximas elecciones estaban previstas para 2008, cuando se abrió un tercio de los escaños del Senado.
En 2015, el Senado se redujo a solo 10 miembros y la cámara de diputados se cerró porque las elecciones para reemplazar a un tercio de los senadores y todos los diputados en 2013 se retrasaron indefinidamente provocando que senadores y diputados terminaran su mandato en enero de 2015 sin ningún reemplazo. Esto llevó a una asamblea nacional disfuncional. En las elecciones parlamentarias de 2015 estos dos tercios debían llenarse con nuevos miembros electos, completando los 30 senadores. [3]
