Los 75 escaños de la Cámara de Representantes y 19 de los 36 escaños del Senado estaban a elección. El Partido Nacionalista en el poder , dirigido por el primer ministro Billy Hughes, perdió su mayoría. El futuro primer ministro Frank Forde y el futuro líder de la oposición John Latham ingresaron al parlamento en estas elecciones.
En esta elección, Hughes, como primer ministro en funciones, hizo su transferencia de segundo asiento, en este caso, de Bendigo a North Sydney. Hughes había ocupado Bendigo desde que se transfirió allí desde West Sydney en las elecciones de 1917, también como primer ministro en funciones.
Hughes sigue siendo el único primer ministro en funciones que se transfiere a otro puesto, no una sino dos veces.
Aparte de las elecciones de 1917 y 1922, todas las demás elecciones han visto al primer ministro en funciones reconsiderar el escaño que ocupaba antes de las elecciones.
