El friso representa al tiaso , una exultante procesión bacanal que acompaña a Dioniso , envuelto con la piel de pantera y tocando el aulos , y Ariadna . Sin embargo, las figuras que los acompañan a menudo se dice que son sátiros no tienen las características comunes de pies hendidos ni colas equinas que fluyen hacia el suelo como se muestra típicamente en la cerámica griega; algunas referencias identifican a las figuras como sileni . A menudo se dice que las figuras envueltas son Ménades.pero claramente no lo son: las ménades son mujeres que acompañan a Dioniso, pero en el jarrón se representa una figura masculina envuelta. Una de las figuras se muestra siendo ungida, típicamente un acto simbólico de divinidad, lo que lleva a la interpretación de algunas de las figuras como Apolo y Dionisio rescatando a Silenus, quien se muestra cayendo y alcanzando una jarra de vino derramada. Esta escena en el jarrón corresponde al dicho "Los dioses cuidan de los niños y de los borrachos" que se ha transmitido oralmente a través de muchas generaciones. Muchas copias del jarrón no representan correctamente la escena, reemplazando a Dioniso con una figura femenina bajo la suposición errónea de que se está realizando un acto sexual.
El jarrón fue redescubierto en un jardín romano que ocupaba parte del solar de los jardines de Salustio [4] en 1566 y adquirido por la familia Borghese . Napoleón se lo compró a su cuñado Camillo Borghese en 1808 y se exhibe en el Louvre desde 1811.
En su capriccio que se muestra a continuación, el artista francés Hubert Robert embelleció y amplió el Jarrón Borghese para lograr un efecto dramático y lo colocó, en condiciones atmosféricamente ruinosas, en el Aventino con vista al Coliseo , una posición que nunca ocupó. Robert también lo pintó en varios otros escenarios, incluidos los jardines de Versalles ( L'entrée du Tapis Vert ) con María Antonieta y Luis XVI . [5]

A menudo emparejado y reescalado para equilibrar el Jarrón Medici , un poco más pequeño , es uno de los jarrones de mármol más admirados e influyentes de la antigüedad, formas que satisfacían el enfoque barroco y neoclásico del arte clásico por igual.
