Historia
Las primeras medallas de oro se otorgaron en 1824. Las medallas de plata también se otorgaron en 1824 y 1827, [1] pero esa práctica se abandonó rápidamente, en su lugar, la RAS estableció otros premios .
En los primeros años, a menudo se otorgaba más de una medalla en un año, pero en 1833 solo se otorgaba una medalla por año. Esto causó un problema cuando se descubrió Neptuno en 1846 , porque muchos sintieron que se debía otorgar un premio conjunto a John Couch Adams y Urbain Le Verrier . Surgió una controversia y no se otorgó ningún premio en 1847. La controversia se resolvió otorgando 12 premios "testimoniales" en 1848 a varias personas, incluidos Adams y Le Verrier, y en 1849 se reanudaron los premios, con un límite de uno por año. Adams y Le Verrier no obtuvieron sus medallas de oro hasta 1866 y 1868, respectivamente. Adams, quien era entonces presidente de la RAS , entregó la medalla a Le Verrier.
En algunos años, particularmente al principio, la RAS a veces decidió que no había nominaciones adecuadas y, por lo tanto, no otorgó la Medalla de Oro. Por tanto, son 17 años sin premio, siendo el más reciente 1942 (en esa ocasión por el desbarajuste de la Segunda Guerra Mundial ). Una medalla por año era la práctica habitual, aunque se otorgaron dos medallas tanto en 1867 como en 1886. Para garantizar el equilibrio en las áreas de investigación, en 1964 el premio se amplió a dos medallas por año, una en astronomía (incluida la astrofísica , la cosmología , etc.) y uno en geofísica (incluida la ciencia planetaria , la tectónica , etc.), que sigue siendo el sistema actual. La primera mujer en recibir la Medalla de Oro fue Caroline Herschel en 1828. Ninguna otra mujer recibió el premio hasta Vera Rubin en 1996. Margaret y Geoffrey Burbidge recibieron conjuntamente la Medalla de Oro de 2005 en astronomía, el primer premio conjunto desde 1886.
