Labeobarbus es un género de peces de tamaño mediano con aletas radiadas perteneciente a la familia de los ciprínidos . Sus especies están ampliamente distribuidas por todo el este de África y especialmente el sur de África , pero también en el lago Tana en Etiopía . Un nombre común , en particular para las especies del sur, es pez amarillo . El nombre científico se refiere al hecho de que estas grandes púas recuerdan a las " carpas "bastante relacionadasdel género Labeo en tamaño y forma. Por lo que se puede decir, todo Labeobarbus las especies son hexaploides . ^[1]

Sistemática

Como muchas otras "púas", se incluyó durante mucho tiempo en Barbus . Parece ser un pariente bastante cercano de los típicos barbos y parientes —el género Barbus propiamente dicho— , pero aún más cercano a las grandes especies del Cercano Oriente actualmente separadas en Carasobarbus . Barbus se ha dividido para dar cuenta del conocimiento filogenético mejorado que indicaba que era altamente parafilético en su amplia circunscripción -, puede ser que Carasobarbus y algunas otras "púas" estrechamente relacionadas (por ejemplo, Labeobarbus reinii ) ahora estén incluidas en Labeobarbuspara evitar una profusión de géneros muy pequeños. ^[2]

La taxonomía de muchas especies en el " género de la papelera " Barbus ha sido recientemente re-evaluado. Aunque la introgresión híbrida puede confundir los estudios basados ​​solo en datos de ADNmt , varias de estas especies parecen estar tan estrechamente relacionadas con Labeobarbus que justifican su inclusión en el género actual, independientemente de si Carasobarbus se considera distinto o no.
