Fleetwood Park Secondary is a public high school in Surrey, British Columbia part of School District 36 Surrey. The school ranked 48 of 293 according to the Fraser Institute Studies in Education Policy in 2012–2013 with a 97.2% graduation rate. The school has three floors and two language classes; Spanish and French.[4]

Academics

Fleetwood Park operates on an 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. schedule which includes four periods and at 11:15 am, a break for lunch during which all students may leave school grounds to eat lunch.[5] The four periods are broken in blocks with the letters A, B, C, D during which different classes take places and giving students five minutes to walk to their next class and go to the washroom.[5] The blocks are rotated on a fixed schedule between Monday and Thursday, but the schedules change weekly on Friday.[5] Every third Monday of the month has an early dismissal with school ending at 1:33 p.m. and is called a Flex Day.[5] There also exist days on which parent-teacher conferences are held. Days like this end at 1:45  p.m.

Fleetwood Park students are obligated to undertake a curriculum that includes four years of English, three years of history, four years of science, four years of mathematics, two years of fine arts or applied skills, three years of Physical education and a year of enterprise studies.[6] Besides classes that students are obligated to take, students are allowed choose the courses they wish to fill into their schedule. Classes at a grade ten level or above give four credits for each successfully completed class with the required curriculum earning 48 credits.[6] A total of 80 credits is needed to graduate.[6]

Fleetwood Park offers a wide selection of elective courses such as carpentry, drafting, cooking, computer studies, dance, sewing, auto motive, engineering, drama and music. Students are able to choose from three Advanced Placement; chemistry, physics, or calculus allowing them to earn post-secondary education credits if they choose to take a test provided by the province or institute. A joinery program is also available for carpentry and cooking.[7] Fleetwood Park offers only two foreign language courses, Spanish and French.

The math academics of Fleetwood park are diverged into three categories for different levels. During the first year, students are able to enter a Math 8 Honours class, provided they pass an exam held in the students' Grade 7 year. In Grade 10, the courses diverge into two levels: Foundations of Math & Pre-Calculus 10, and Workplace Mathematics 10. In Grade 11 and 12, the Foundations & Pre-Calculus course further diverge into their own paths, Pre-Calculus and Foundations.[8] After Pre-Calculus 12, students have the option of taking Advanced Placement Calculus, which prepares them for either the AB or BC AP exam for university credits.

School facilities

The school's education mainly takes place in the building which is three stories high. Recently, school portable buildings were added to the lot behind the school to add classrooms to the growing number of students. The school has 2 gymnasiums, a dance studio, two band rooms, and a plaza on the first floor which acts as a multipurpose space, usually for theatre productions. Notably, the cafeteria kitchen includes a spice/wok kitchen and offers exotic foods, due to the popular demands of students.

Notable Clubs and publications

Student Council is one of the main clubs which puts on school events such as Fleetwood Thursdays, Spirit Weeks and school dances. ReachOut is a club that focuses on promoting diversity and raising awareness about global and community issues. In the year of 2008-2009, ReachOut fundraised $8500 to build a school in Sierra Leone.[9]

Dragon Tales Theatre Company

Since 2017, the Dragon Tales Theatre Company has put on many successful productions and has received numerous awards at different festivals. In December 2017, they put on their inaugural production of "Game of Tiaras" written by Don Zolidis, and later in May 2018 they produced another Don Zolidis play, "The Lonely Hearts Club." In the 2018-2019 year, they produced their first musical, "Into The Woods," which brought in nearly sold-out crowds for four nights straight. In December 2019, they put on a production of "The Outsiders," based on the novel by S. E. Hinton. They as part of a one act play festival, put on a production made by Chili Bomb Productions (written by Devon Furtado and Kanwar Sidhu) called "Ode to Dreams" and came back with great reviews. They also did a short play version of the short story "The Lottery".[citation needed]

Sports

Fleetwood Park is well known for their athletic program.[by whom?] The school has won three provincial championships with their most recent being the boys AAA Basketball banner. In 2014 and 2016 the Senior Girls Soccer team won the AAA Soccer Provincials.[10][11]
